Travel Insurance FAQ

  1. What kind of medical insurance for travelers is available in Costa Rica?
  2. What about insurance against theft or loss?
  3. Will my insurance cover me in Costa Rica?
  1. What kind of medical insurance for travelers is available in Costa Rica?
Costa Rica’s National Insurance Institute (INS) offers a travel insurance package that includes coverage for: accidental death, total permanent accidental disability, repatriation of remains, and medical expenses. The maximum coverage costs approximately $35 for three weeks and provides payouts of up to $55,000 for accidental death or disability and up to $5,500 for repatriation and medical expenses (figures based on current exchange rates and subject to change). There is a 5% deductible for medical expenses.

While the coverage limits may seem modest compared to international standards, the insurance cost is similarly low. For treatments received within Costa Rica, this policy should cover most expenses. If you’re interested in this option, ILISA is happy to assist in arranging coverage for you.

  2. What about insurance against theft or loss?Unfortunately, there is no insurance currently available in Costa Rica that covers theft or loss of personal belongings. However, Costa Rica is generally considered as safe as, or safer than, most places in the US or Europe. Nonetheless, students should always take precautions to keep valuable items close to their bodies and never leave belongings unattended. As part of our orientation, we provide a safety briefing to help ensure students are aware of best practices for personal security.
  3. Will my insurance cover me in Costa Rica?
To ensure you’re fully covered, it’s best to check with your insurance company directly before arriving in Costa Rica. While many insurance providers in Europe and some in the United States offer overseas coverage, additional costs are often involved. We recommend confirming these details with your provider to clarify any questions about your coverage.
