The Homestay Experience: A True Cultural Immersion

At ILISA, we believe that homestay is not just a place to stay—it’s an essential part of your overall learning experience. But we understand that you may still be wondering, Is homestay right for me?

To help you get a real sense of what it’s like, we’ve asked some students to share their personal homestay stories and insights.

Cultural Encounter of the Close Kind: Students Speak Out on Homestay Experiences

Susan Lanter, ILISA student (June–July 1996)

Before coming to Costa Rica, I had never lived with a family other than my own for an extended period. Honestly, I was a bit apprehensive about the idea, especially since my own family and I have our challenges! However, knowing that my goal was to truly immerse myself in Latin American culture and improve my Spanish, I realized that not choosing the homestay option would be a missed opportunity.

When I arrived in Costa Rica, I barely spoke any Spanish—I could only say, “No hablo español.” I remember thinking on the plane, “How strange! A stranger is going to be my ‘mother’ for the next eight weeks, and I can’t even talk to her.”

My nerves quickly eased as I arrived at the San José airport to find my “Tico parents” holding a sign with my name on it. Phew! I had found my family. The next challenge: communicating with them. Although we didn’t dive into deep conversations, I was able to tell them where I was from and express how happy I was to be in Costa Rica. I also learned that my host mother would accompany me on my first day to ILISA. How exciting! It had been nearly 20 years since anyone took me to school!

As my vocabulary expanded and my confidence grew, our conversations became more meaningful. Whenever I needed help with my homework, my host family was always eager to assist, and they never laughed at my “gringa” accent! One evening, after attending a dance class at ILISA (a must-do activity), my Tico father even moved the dinner table to teach me salsa and merengue steps!

Living with my Tico family allowed me to experience the cultural differences between Costa Ricans and Americans firsthand. I tried foods I’d never encountered before, enjoyed an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables, and indulged in the delicious Costa Rican coffee. My family taught me so much, and I was happy to share my own culture in return. I gained a deeper appreciation for other cultures, and I’m certain I’ll carry that appreciation with me throughout my life.

No matter where life takes me, I’ll always remember my Tico family’s warmth, patience, and generosity during my time in Costa Rica.

What Our Students Say: Homestay Feedback

“I made my reservations at the very last minute, but you still managed to place me with a wonderful family who exceeded my expectations. The food! I wish I could take Damaris (my host mom) home with me—not just because she made me feel welcome, but because her cooking is absolutely fantastic! I’m a vegetarian, and I’ve eaten better food here than I ever do at home.”
— Holly White

“This family is so loving and happy—they will serve as a role model for me. Coming from New York City, it’s hard to believe a family could be so warm and welcoming toward a stranger.”
— Stuart Gilmore

“The family is incredibly thoughtful and eager to make me feel comfortable. They accept me and my questions with open arms. I truly feel like I’ve known them for years. They encourage my growth in Spanish and my understanding of Costa Rican culture, speaking candidly with me about our differences. I’m thrilled to be here with them!”
— Stuart Gilmore

A Heartfelt Letter: More on the Homestay Experience

“I just wanted to make sure ILISA knows how much I’ve enjoyed the homestay. I’m staying with Rita Rodríguez and her family, and I’ve appreciated every moment. There’s always something happening at the house—friends and relatives visiting, the everyday activities of an extended family—and I’ve been included in everything. The more I see, the richer my cultural experience becomes.

I couldn’t be happier with the entire experience. The family is wonderful!”
— Michaela Wyman

We hope these stories help you get a better sense of what your homestay experience will be like. Ready to immerse yourself in Costa Rican culture and improve your Spanish? The perfect family is waiting for you!
