  1. For how many years has ILISA been in business?
ILISA was founded in 1987 and has many years of experience in teaching Spanish. We are known for our personal and professional approach, which ensures that students have a rewarding and enjoyable learning experience.
  2. What is ILISA’s mission?
From the very beginning, ILISA’s mission has been clear: to help you achieve your learning goals by creating the ideal environment for learning.
  3. What is ILISA’s approach to language training?
Our group classes are limited to a maximum of four students, while our private one-on-one sessions offer personalized, tailor-made programs. At ILISA, we focus on a communicative approach rather than following a specific ‘method.’ This approach fosters a dynamic classroom environment and encourages students to speak as much as possible. You’ll be able to apply your new language skills right away, both inside and outside the classroom.
  4. What are ILISA’s facilities like?
In addition to our prime location, our facilities—designed with students in mind—are unparalleled by any language school in the region. Unlike most schools, our classrooms are purpose-built for small groups, ensuring optimal conditions for language learning. They are filled with natural light, well-ventilated, and comfortably furnished.

The entrance level features the reception desk, administrative offices, a teacher planning area, a spacious lobby with a skylight, and an interview room for entrance exams and private conferences with staff. This room also serves as a classroom for students with mobility challenges.

On the next level, you’ll find additional classrooms, a student library, a computer lab with space for four computers, and a meeting room for teachers. The library houses our growing collection of books, Spanish-language newspapers, and other student resources. It’s the perfect quiet space for students looking to study after class. The computers are equipped for email, general use, and multimedia Spanish programs, offering a convenient way for students to stay connected to business matters back home while enhancing their language skills.

The top floor is home to two more classrooms, the marketing director’s office, and the director’s office. We’ve added excellent insulation to the roof to keep these spaces cool and comfortable.

Our facilities also feature a spacious terrace which boasts a fantastic view of the surrounding area. Students often gather on the terrace to relax after class, chat with peers, read the newspaper, or do homework. With over 100 square meters (1,000 sq. ft.) of space, the terrace is ideal for gatherings before, between, and after classes, as well as cultural activities like music and dance events. Unlike many schools that operate from converted homes, we offer amenities that make a real difference in your study experience. Our combination of a comfortable learning environment and a convenient location provides the perfect setting for serious yet enjoyable language study.

  5. What is the size of the school in terms of the number of students?
We welcome approximately 700 students each year. During the high season (June-August), there are about 90 students on campus at any given time. In contrast, during the off-season (the rest of the year), we typically have an average of 20 students at a time.
  6. Where is ILISA located?
ILISA is located in San Pedro, an eastern suburb of San José, just 15 minutes by bus from downtown. As Costa Rica’s main university is also in San Pedro, buses to downtown run every 5 to 10 minutes, making it easy to get around. Additionally, there is heavy bus traffic passing through San Pedro on the way to neighborhoods farther east of San José.
  7. What else can you tell me about San Pedro?

San Pedro is a lively and bustling area, offering a mix of commercial and residential spaces. Many of its older homes have been converted into offices, contributing to the area’s unique charm. ILISA is located just four blocks (400 meters) from the main avenue, in a peaceful residential zone. The school is situated on a hillside, providing picturesque views of the mountains to the south and parts of the city.

The area is also home to one of the largest malls in Central America, covering over 80,000 m². This mall, just 7 blocks from ILISA, features a variety of retail shops, a five-screen cinema, restaurants, banks, and a popular nightclub. San Pedro offers all the necessary services and amenities you’ll need during your stay, so there’s no need to venture into downtown San José unless you want to explore the cultural scene or enjoy the lively nightlife.

Thanks to the nearby university, San Pedro has an abundance of dining options to suit all tastes and budgets. You can enjoy a simple lunch starting from $6 or treat yourself to a more upscale meal for around $15 – $20 including drinks and dessert. The university area is also a cultural hub, with art films, concerts, and dance performances on offer throughout the week. You can also find live music performances at local restaurants, especially on weekends.
