Why Panama
City of Knowledge
We quote from the City of Knowledge website.
The mission of the academic component of the City of Knowledge is to identify and facilitate links and associations among academic, research, and innovative technological institutions, in areas where scientific and humanistic knowledge can promote human development. Through the synergy produced between programs, the union between cultures and the development of understanding among human societies is enhanced.
The academic component is made up of an international consortium of institutions of excellence whose interests are concentrated in areas on which Panama’s heritage and potential, as well as the unique opportunities of synergy offered by the City of Knowledge, can be advantageous.
When the U.S. Army handed over control of the Canal to Panama in 1999, they left empty all the military bases in the Canal Zone.
Ft. Clayton, formerly the headquarters of the US Army Southern Command is now home to educational institutions such as ILISA and a variety of NGO’s such as the Red Cross, UNICEF, the Balboa Academy (an American highschool), UNPD and many more.
Canada’s McGill University has a semester program. So does the School for International Training. Universities like UC Davis, Cornell University, Texas A&M, Iowa State all have programs at the City of Knowledge.
A consortium of NGO’s and local as well as US Universities operates the George Westerman Center, doing education and research for the promotion of sustainable development in marginal communities.
We are in good company! Moreover, our being on one campus with organizations like these makes it very easy to create multi-disciplinary programs that combine Spanish language training for specific purposes. ILISA’s Spanish programs for healthcare, educators, social services and others will benefit a lot from these connections.
Regardless of the program you enroll in, you will enjoy access to the several recreational facilities we can offer being in the City of Knowledge.
ILISA itself also offers broadband Internet access to its students and WiFi in and around our building. Staying connected with friend, family or work is a non-issue.
Using the facilties of the City of Knowledge, we also have convenient access to meeting rooms for up one hundred people, video conferencing and multimedia equipment. Workshops of any size are no problem.
As cosmopolitan city located at sea level, in the tropics, Panama city may be a ‘cool; place but it can get pretty hot down here. To assure your comfort while studying Spanish, all our facilities indoors are centrally airconditioned.
Of course, a refreshing dive before or after class is always a great option.
ILISA Panama is particularly suited for high school and/or middle school programs where a safe, containable environment with all possible sports facilities is highly desired. On campus housing can be arranged or homestay with nearby host families including a private shuttle service is desired.
